Do you offer true beginner classes for people who haven’t danced in a while?

Yes! Our beginner classes allow you to move according to your own abilities. Many returning dancers, as well as new dancers, take their first classes at YNS. Our teachers are very supportive, friendly and are here to answer any questions you might have. You need no prior experience to feel comfortable, yet challenged in our beginner classes.

Which classes would you recommend for someone who has no previous dance experience?

The best classes for the beginner are our Yoga Booty Ballet & Zumba.  Both of these classes are taught in the “follow the lleader” style with plenty of repetition.  This type of instruction makes it easy for you to maximize your class physically without being technically overwhelming.  These two classes fall under the category of cardio/fitness rather than technique.   If you are looking for a beginner choreographed class, we recommend Booiaka, Hip Hop (on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays), and Basci or Classical Ballet.  Please keep in mind that all of our classes are to open to all levels and are welcoming environments to everyone.  However, classes labeled Intermediate or are followed by a two (2) are geared toward more experienced students.   If you are looking specifically to try a dance technique class please feel free to call us so we can suggest an appropriate class for your personal level.

Dance Class Etiquette: If this is your first dance class we want you to be aware of dance class etiquette. We know that for your first class is can be nerve wracking and the tendancy may be to stand front and center to see the teacher. The best place for you to be as a beginner is in the middle on the sides. It gives you a great view of the entire front row (who usually know the routing or sytle) and is a much less intimidating place to stand!

Where can I find a description of the classes and prices?

You can find a description of classes and class prices on the homepage; the class schedule is listed front and center. Click the link at “Today’s Classes” and you will see the class schedule for the entire month, as well as the instructors and prices. Our class pass rates are listed as well.

Are new students permitted to watch a class before taking part?

Taking class gives our members a place to escape their daily grind; we like to honor that time. Having someone sit and watch the class without participating can make people in class feel like they are being watched. However, you can see samples of our classes on our Youtube channel.  Click here to watch.

Can I drop in on a class?

Absolutely! All of our classes are drop-ins. We offer a wide variety of classes so you will be sure to find a class that fits your schedule.

How early should I arrive before my first class?

Please arrive 15-20 minutes early in order to allow ample time to find parking as well as fill out a quick release form before signing in and paying for class. This is especially essential for Zumba and Booiaka classes because they fill up fast.

How long are classes?

Dance classes run 55 - 75 minutes. Yoga classes run between 75-90 minutes.
Can I bring my child to class/do you offer kids classes?

Although we currently only offer adult classes, we DO allow children to attend certain classes as long as they are accompanied by an adult. If you wish to take class WITH your child the best classes would be Zumba or Yoga Booty Ballet, with the youngest age being around 12 years old. If your child wants to take their own class, such as hip hop or jazz, we have a minimum age requirement of 16, unless approved by the instructor. Strip hop and burlesque age is 18. We have a complete list of age appropriate classes at the studio.

Where is the best place to park?

During the week, it is best to find street parking nearby, as the Warner lot is now charging for parking access until 7:00 p.m. On the weekends, street parking as well as the Warner lot are available for parking.

What should I wear?

You want to wear clothes that allow you to move freely. Clothing made of material that allows your skin to "breathe" will make you more comfortable, as you will be working up a sweat!

Do I need special shoes?

Most classes are taken in either your barefoot, sneakers or jazz shoes. For ballet it is best to have ballet slippers, for jazz or lyrical you may want "footundeez" which are sold at the studio. Ballroom shoes or short kitten heels work well for our Salsa classes. We do ask that you NOT wear black-soled shoes to preserve the quality of the floors.

Will I get a workout?

You will be working out, sweating and having a blast! You are welcome to participate at your own pace or push forward and challenge yourself. No Matter your level, you will certainly raise your heart rate and get your fitness goals on the right track in any of our classes!

Do the class passes expire or can they be extended?

We uphold a strict expiration policy for our class passes. Please make sure they meet your needs before purchase. Passes expire 6 months from purchase date. The monthly limited will expire 30 days from the purchase date.

Is your space available for rental/rehearsal? The space is available for practice, rehearsal, and special events. Please e-mail denise@yourneighborhoodstudio.com to discuss rates and availability.
Do you have private classes? We offer small group classes for private events i.e. Birthdays, Bridal Shower and other special occasions. Please send us an e-mail if you'd like to make arrangements! We'd love to have you!
Which classes require a yoga mat?

The Cardio Ballet, Yoga Booty Ballet and Yoga Flow require a yoga mat. On occasion, the Burlesque class will also use a mat but it is not a requirement. If you do not have one or forget your own, we have yoga mats available for your use.

I'm not very flexible. Can I still take yoga?

Our Yoga instructors are well trained and able to provide poses for yoga students of all levels. If you have concerns, you are more than welcome to speak with the instructor before class. All levels are welcome! You are encouraged to ensure your safety and gradually progress towards a stronger more limber body.

Should I bring a yoga mat?

Please bring your yoga mat and a towel. Your body will generate a lot of heat in these classes. If you forget your mat, you may use one of ours.

Should I eat before yoga?

In general, the stomach should be empty before practice. Before your yoga practice, we recommend waiting 2-3 hours after eating meat; 1.5-2.5 hours after carbohydrates/starches; 0.5-1.0 hour after fruits & veggies.

Do you have a changing room and a place to shower?

Yes, we have showers and a large changing/locker room available for your use. Please bring your own toiletries if you decide to shower. We also have cubbies inside our studios where you can leave your personal items.
