In 2000 a friend of mine gave me a book. Although typically we learn from reading books, my lesson has come from the note written inside the book. This is what it said, "...the joy of dance is not about the destination, it is about the beauty in your journey. The pain, the introspection, the constant inspection, the frustration, the achievement, and ultimately finding your" center," all of which gives rise to your unique self expression. Recognize the entire journey as the destination, because although you ultimately will get exactly where you want to go, where you actually end up will be somewhere you don't even know exists yet. "
At the time I didn't realize how much of my life would be in those words. While this would be a great time to list my professional experience that information will not show you who I am or why I opened the studio.
For me, dance and yoga both offer the opportunity to release, to open, to deal with fears and frustrations. I am not a dancer and I cannot do Hanumanasana (the splits), but I love to dance... and I love yoga... and I love sharing those experiences with people who feel the same way. That is why six years after receiving that note, while driving down Washington Blvd I took a right on Center Street and knew I had found "my center." Now, after three years we have out grown our special place and have moved to the former Debbie Allen Dance Academy, located 2.3 miles East of the current location at 3625 Hayden Avenue in Culver City! The exciting journey continues!
Special thanks to Bryan Kest who started me down this road with my Yoga teacher training, Misty Tripoli for opening up the world of group exercise and teaching me how to manage artists, and Kye Bracket for the note... and the book!

Rennie Yabiku
Yoga Flow
|
Rennie has been practicing and studying yoga for more than 10 years. She began her journey at Bryan Kest’s Power Yoga Studio in Santa Monica. Since then, she has completed 500 hours of teacher training through Yogaworks, where she studied with Jeanne Heilman, Annie Carpenter and Lisa Walford.
She first started practicing yoga purely to exercise the physical body, but soon realized the connection of body, mind and soul through the yoga practice. “I got turned on to yoga because I loved the way I felt after class. It was such a great ‘workout’. But after a few years of practicing, I began to notice a profound change within. There was a stillness and quietness that emerged as I was breathing and moving deeper into each pose. I learned how to just ‘be’ and accept and appreciate the present moment.”
Rennie uses a combination of vinyasa flow, breath awareness and alignment of poses to create a challenging class that guides students to move deeper within their own practice.

Tyler Critelli
Tap
|
Tyler grew up in his mother's dance studios around the south bay and wasn't given much of a choice in the dancing matter. By the age of 12 he was choreographing and teaching as well as performing and competing nationally with a company. Focusing on tap and hip hop, Tyler taught throughout college and had the unique opportunity to study music in Cuba where he brought along his tap shoes and began "playing" with a percussionist. It was there that he found new inspiration, not only for his music, but his dancing as well. Nowadays he resides in Manhattan Beach where he surfs daily, works on music, and practices yoga. He is very excited to be working with YNS!! |
